Re-moving the Burden of Choice with Hipstery - Something for the Weekend

Re-moving the Burden of Choice with Hipstery

HipsteryWhat if when we bought products, the choice was taken away from us and we were given the product the expert thought best? That’s the theme of Hipstery a new T-shirt store online. Their manifesto reads, ‘Life is increasingly loosing mystery to the encompassing world of technology and an endless desire for knowing’. Rather than choosing your T-shirt design, they choose one for you, basing their decision on a survey of seven questions. The faces behind Hipstery, who prefer to be known as ‘scientists’, say they are experts in picking the right T-Shirt for you, ‘With over 10 years experience in the t-shirt industry we combine our knowledge, contacts and superior style to create the Hipstery’. A thought provoking retail model, it would be interesting to see all kinds of retailers take this approach to selling us products, experts in their field prescribing what is best for us based on what we told them. It would certainly put surprise and mystery back into our lives. Whether it would work out or not, Hipstery T-Shirts will definately be on our Xmas list.

Project: Original Business Concepts. Do you know any? | uncluttered white spaces

Example: In the midst of an explosion of information and choice, are consumers missing out on surprise? The team behind Hipstery, a web store for mystery t-shirts, thinks they are. Which is why there are no t-shirt designs to choose from on Hipestry’s site. Instead, customers select a size, pay EUR 17 (plus shipping) and answer a series of questions about themselves. The Hipstery’s ’style scientists’ run the responses to this quiz through their ‘innovative style algorithm’—both concepts which the site’s irreverent tone would lead us to interpret loosely—to select the right t-shirt from their exclusive range of designs, many of which are out-of-print shirts from small suppliers.

Hipstery - NecesCity - Feel the City's Pulse

Using the power of science for the sake of fashion

Science has permeated almost every aspect of our lives; Marketeers track our purchases so they can recommend products; microwaves cook our popcorn and send our emails; we clone sheep, keep Larry King alive and there’s even talk of breast implants with GPS. But when it comes to fashion, the most scientific we get is the deduction algorithm that says it’s smarter to put on our jeans first, before our sneakers.

Now some clever, if not secretive t-shirt-loving Germans are using a unique algorithm, combined with personal information given by you, to match you with your perfect t-shirt. The Hipstery, which sounds like a home for trendy nuns, has over a decade of experience, choosing customised t-shirt choices from a wide selection and sending them out from their secret bunker somewhere in the European Alps. Simply log on to their website, go through some cocktail bar-styled small talk, and they’ll use the powers of science to select the perfect t-shirt for you – guaranteed – no matter where you live in the world.

Unique t-shirt selection, reverse osmosis bottled water and iPhone porn. What will science think of next?

Unravelling the t-shirt Hipstery | BenGilman.com

The concept

In a nutshell, The Hipstery “liberates you from the burden of choice” – specifically, you tell them your t-shirt size, fill in a fancy-dan quiz about your tastes and their t-shirt scientists go find you a t-shirt and dispatch it to your door. The t-shirts are sourced from various cool designers and are usually from rare, limited edition runs.

The delivery

A couple of weeks later (The Hipstery are in Germany and the UK post were probably on strike) a mysterious brown paper bag dropped through my door. In fact, it didn’t drop through my door at all. Instead, a red “sorry you were out and we can’t stuff a t-shirt through your letterbox” card arrived and I had to take a trip to the Royal Mail depot to collect it. So, eventually…

What's this?

So the mystery is slightly compromised by the fact that the envelope is carrying The Hipstery’s branding but it was the start of ‘the experience’  – not something you usually experience when buying things online.

The grand opening

Using the time-honoured combination of my fingers and opposable thumbs I tore open the package to reveal the goodness inside.

The contents

As promised, the primary part of the delivery was the mystery t-shirt – on arrival it was wrapped in a natty plastic bag that is missing from this picture.

Urban Junkies - It’s a Mystery to Me

It’s a Mystery to Me

RCA Secret, the Little Shop of Horrors & Hipstery offer a dash of creative surprise

mysterious tshirts

Aside from tax inspections, break-ins and impressively convincing transsexuals called Mary, nothing beats a slice of oft-forgotten surprise to brighten one’s day. A dash of mystery to put a spring in the old step. A brush with the unknown to turn that frown upside-down.

Perhaps the original ‘creative whodunnit’, this year’s RCA Secret is already peeking around the corner (Nov 13-20). Y’know the one: a wall of beautiful postcards at £40 each, all secretly signed on the reverse: maybe you get a priceless Emin, maybe a pretty-but-less-collectable Ermine.

Should you fancy your creativity even more mysterious then wander Hackney-wards, where Viktor/Silas (even his name is an mystery) Wynd and Suzette Field of The Last Tuesday Society infamy have recently launched their Little Shop of Horrors for everything from two-headed skeletons to antique gynaecologica, with no doubt a few gin-soaked talks in-between.

Of course, if you’re more of a heart-on-your-sleeve, surprise-on-your-chest (and less a formaldehyde and specula) type, then I urge you to check out Hipstery. You pay 17Euros and tell them your size. They send you an eminently cool, limited-edition, rare as hen’s teeth t-shirt. And you get no say in the matter. At all.

See, isn’t surprise wonderful? Even if her name isn’t really Mary.

Hello You Creatives | My Hipstery Experience

I’ve blogged Hipstery before, the t-shirt company that uses arcane magic and scientific voodoo to pick the t-shirt for you, and now finally is the follow up.

Sadly the T-shirt they picked for me took longer to arrive than normal thanks to the Royal Mail postal strike but today it arrived. It came all the way from Deutschland. Which to the uninformed is the “Land of the Deutsch”.

I enjoy the little touches, the hand written UK and spray “?”

Purple, the colour of kings.

Check out my impressive package.

My package contains two awesome old time photos & some funky 3D Glasses.
We shall be modelling these later in the office.

Our experience of the t-shirt

I wore this t-shirt to the shop and the shop keeper gave me the keys to the store. He said I looked like “a leader of men and style” before setting himself on fire so I’d be the last thing he’d see. So overall the experience has been positive
